my mom valerie weinlos (whom i referred to as mama organ grinder on the radio) died on wednesday. the world's biggest fan of my show, especially when i played deep dark woods, she texted immediately after my show every single week to say something like great show. on wednesday i got a text from my lovely fiancee congratulating me on a fine program, but didn't hear from my mom. i texted her cell to make sure she was ok, then I got the worst phone call of my life from my dad. every time i plan my show, i keep my mom in mind and try to throw in a few songs she'll like. i will continue to do this, but not right away. for the next couple/few weeks, you'll either hear a rerun or a fill-in during my timeslot. thanks.

april 13 playlist:

korla pandit - turkish dance (single)
the budos band - budos rising (the budos band ii)
stackridge - the last plimsoll (the man in the bowler hat)
dolly parton - don't drop out (one kiss can lead to another: girl group sounds, lost & found)

joris verdin - sept pieces en la bemol majeur et sol diese mineur fwv 42 - 7. poco maestoso (cesar franck: complete works for harmonium)
grant green - have you ever had the blues (blues for lou)
the recently deceased tony conrad, the minimalist composer who gave us more than we ever asked for (like a 64 minute pump organ soundtrack for the 11 minute film joan of arc, for instance.) he'll be missed.

incidentally, neither bob salad nor i will be on cjsr tomorrow morning at 7. catch devon, the good machine all by his lonesome for two hours.

april 6 playlist:

merle haggard - huntsville (someday we'll look back)
bill doggett - fatso (wow!)
marie-claire alain - passacaglia and fugue in c minor bwv 582 (bach: toccata & fugue; passacaglia; etc.)
avraham bord - mitzvah tants: mis-sod hakamim, ya'amod (jesting), bore olam be-qinyan (hassidic tunes of dancing and rejoicing)
shye ben tzur, jonny greenwood & the rajasthan express - chala vahi des (junun)
george harrison - greasy legs (wonderwall music)
jack macgowran & samuel beckett - from embers (macgowran speaking beckett)

llewellyn williams - mussorgsky: night on bald mountain (at the pasadena civic auditorium organ)
william maddox - rimsky-korsakov: flight of the bumblebee (the wings of the wind)
dr. lonnie smith - afrodesia (evolution)
no organ or organist in this picture; one of the greatest jewels in America's musical crown petting a hip dog will have to do. i was already planning to open the show with merle haggard in joyous recognition of the man's 79th birthday. then, in a manner befitting the shakespeare of country music, he died the same day. caitlin from cjsr's imaginary landscapes pointed out that I could still play the hag out of joy rather than sadness.
